Music Review: Robin Thicke: Love After War

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Robin Thicke Love After War album cover

Love After War is a collection of songs with lyrics that are most likely about Robin Thicke’s life, his wife and now his son that unfolds over tracks inspired by: ’70s rock/soul (“An Angel On Each Arm”, which sounds like a ’70s action film theme song);  ’70s funk (“The New Generation”, which has the funkiest horns, bassline and an organ to boot); classical music (“Never Give Up”); smooth jazz R&B (“Love After War”); ’90s slow jams (“Mission”); Latin rhythms (Lovely Lady); ’60s pop (Full Time Believer) and more.

Did Robin Thicke do anything different than what he’s done before with this album? Not really. In fact, you can probably find a song on one of his previous albums that is a cousin to a track on Love After War. BUT, just because he used same recipe it doesn’t mean this cake is stale.

Over five albums Thicke seems to have settled into a style and a sound and that’s quite alright. There’s something about being able to recognize an artist by the style or sound of his work. It gives fans something to look forward whenever there’s talk of a new project.  Thicke didn’t reinvent the wheel, but he is steering it nicely down his lane. If he decides to change it up and switch lanes, then that’s alright too. And you can definitely hear in his music the influence of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, but if as an artist anyone should influence your work, then it should be the best. Robin Thicke does a good job of carrying the torch of musicianship and representing soul on Love After War, and not “blue-eyed soul” either… soul period.

Andre Harrell-The Kenny Burns Show Interview

A must watch interview with Andre Harrell founder of Uptown Records. Sage advice, and truthfully, listening to Andre should give every indication as to why Uptown and his other ventures have been as successful as they have been.

Should “Secret Garden” Be Remixed??

Secret Garden from the Back On The Block Album

Secret Garden from the "Back On The Block" album

Last week was quite the week for the remix. While I’m an advocate of creativity and stamping your own individuality to a song, I do have boundaries when it comes to certain songs. The other week I was glad to see artists coming together for the relief efforts in Haiti however the remake of “We Are the World” shouldn’t have been the song they rallied behind. I can’t say the remix didn’t have “any” hopeful moments but honestly the bad faded out the good efforts. I, like many fans, probably agree with Jay’s statement given to MTV about the remake efforts.

“I’m a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that’s going on in Haiti. … So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but We Are the World is [musically] untouchable like Thriller is untouchable.  It was a valiant effort, but for me, it’s gonna be untouchable.”

Truthfully, there are some songs that just have a magic. Maybe the stars are perfectly aligned or Jupiter just happens to rise in Leo’s moon – hell, I don’t know, but they have a timeless, “Sistine Chapel” appeal to them. In this case, “We Are The World” happens to be one of those songs. Unfortunately, when you touch a song of that caliber, it can lose the magic and take an awful turn as we saw in that remake. Another song that’s been placed on the assembly line for a “spit shine” remix is (more…)

Robin Thicke’s Live Performance in Atlanta!!!!

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Hola GFM fam,

It’s your girl WestStyle Chronicles signing in from my “sex therapy” with Robin Thicke in the ATL – gosh, I love my job!!! With long lines and a pretty thick crowd (no pun intended), that wasn’t going to stop your girl from getting the “up close” for this anticipated performance. Plus, I didn’t have to stand in the line. Lol!!!

Dressed in usual sophistication, Thicke wasted no time in ripping the stage and telling his female clientele to “Shake It For Daddy”. We can all guess who “Daddy” is. From start to finish, his performance had a lot of energy. From every song to every word, the audience was with him. The only thing I regret is that he never sang his single “Sex Therapy” but aside from that, it was a great experience. Here are some clips from the great concert.

Jennifer Hudson came through Atlanta’s Fox Theater last night with Robin Thicke, and surprise guests Fantasia and Jennifer Holliday. The tour is receiving rave reviews across the country, with the ATL show apparently being one of the best.

Check out the clips below for a taste of Jennifer and Fantasia killin’ it. If you’ve had a chance to catch the tour, let us know what you thought about it. Check out more, including a Dreamgirls performance from the 1982 Tony’s after the jump and “the Jennifers” performing together.
