I really, really miss this type of singing. Trey Lorenz has the type of voice that will make you remove your shoe and throw it across the room at the tv. Audiences were first introduced to Trey as Mariah Carey’s protege’ on Mariah’s amazing remake of the Jackson 5 classic “I’ll Be There”. From then on, we needed to hear more, and Trey’s response was 1992′s self titled disc.
The set opens with the hit single, “Someone to Hold”. This is the type of track that sounded good when it was initially released, but it sounds even better now- especially in this age in which you have to hunt to find good music on the radio. One of the things that I always say is, “If you’re going to do a remake, put your foot all of the way into that remake”. Thank God that Trey does just that on his remake of The Commodores “Just to Be Close to You”. Trey takes the classic tune and laces it with his multi-octave range. The result is remake gold.
Happy anniversary Mariah Carey! While we all know she’s got one of the best voices in the game (okay, if you’re asking me, it’s the best voice in the game), but she’s influenced more than generations of American Idol Contestants (did we mention she’s one of the most successful songwriters of all time too? 18 #1 hits almost all penned by Ms. Carey, putting her just behind Elvis). Happy Birthday Anniversary MC, and thank you for incomparable contributions to music!

The epitome of the Downtown/Uptown early 80′s exchange of musical ideas from new wave to hip-hop and back again. Tom Tom Club is an American new wave band founded in 1981 by husband and wife team Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, both also known for being bandmembers of Talking Heads. Originally established as a side project from Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club comprised a loose aggregation of musicians, sound engineers.
“Genius of Love” has been sampled or reinterpreted by many artists, including L’Trimm, MC Redman, Funkdoobiest, and Mariah Carey in her hit single “Fantasy”. “It’s Nasty” (1982) by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was one of the early hip-hop versions of the song, however the sample was re-recorded by a live band rather than just taken from the original recording, as was common practice at the time. Another version, “Genius Rap” (1981), by Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, was the first cover version. Max B also sampled “Genius of Love” in his single “Get Outta Jail”.
Ahh… what better time to wax philosophically than a Monday morning. Yeah right. But something has been on my mind for a while now and I just wanted to commit a few words to what I’ve been thinking about.
I’m wondering if this concept of “Grown Folks Music” has always been with us? Is it a natural progression in musical taste as one matures? Or is the concept a fairly recent development( and by recent I mean the last 20 years or so) spurred on by a perception of a downgrade in the quality of popular music. Really and truly that’s what we are discussing here, popular music because there has always been great music that for one reason or another does not become popular so unfortunately it is not part of the discussion.
