Now a 20-year-old slow jam classic, “Forever My Lady” by Jodeci went to #1 on the R&B chart and spent three weeks there. The song was written and produced by DeVante Swing and Al B. Sure! From the group’s debut album Forever My Lady.
I had to repost this just because… out of all the challenges and the negative influences that it has been well documented that these gentlemen have struggled with, the legacy of music is undeniable. As I have often pointed it is often very difficult to separate the individual from the art(especially now with non-stop news(gossip) and the wall between performer and audience erased. Nevertheless, apples to apples this is what it is and what this is can be again if it isn’t already… you know what I mean? (more…)
Certain songs you can mark the very minute that you heard them and the response you felt immediately. For me that is definitely the case with the Jodeci classic “Forever My Lady”.
In the late summer of 1991 I happened to have the television tuned into BET B.V.(Before Viacom) but I had stepped out of the room for a few minutes to do something and while I was making my way back I caught the last minute or so of the video (from Devante Swing’s keyboard solo out). Everyday is a throwback here at GFM. I haven’t repped for the old school in a minute so I thought I would post this gem from ’93. Back in the era where your label affiliation really meant something. Father MC, Jodeci, Mary J, Blige and Heavy D. all put it down and let us know in no uncertain terms that Uptown was still kickin’ it.
It’s unfortunate that in a very short time Uptown would go the way of so many cutting edge labels. But, nothing lasts forever… I think one of my favorite parts of this clip is when they had to actually bring “Puff Daddy” on stage, I’ll let that one marinate.
A must watch interview with Andre Harrell founder of Uptown Records. Sage advice, and truthfully, listening to Andre should give every indication as to why Uptown and his other ventures have been as successful as they have been.
