Das EFX: “They Want EFX”

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

“Dun, dun, dun, dun… dun dun.”  Das EFX’s word play and fast-paced delivery was quite different for hip-hop at this time. “They Want EFX” by Das EFX was one of the top songs of 1992. It reached #1 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. The song features samples of “Buffalo Gals” by Malcolm McLaren and “Blind Man Can See It” by James Brown.

Happy Birthday-DJ Jazzy Jeff!

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Out of the entire lexicon of what DJ Jazzy Jeff has produced and influenced musically there is a specific reason why I wanted to provide this clip along with birthday well wishes. The reason is simple: This song is history. There is absolutely no debating that point. 21 years and 11 months ago today DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand” won the first Rap Grammy Award. (more…)

D-Nice Presents True Hip-Hop Stories: Lords of the Underground

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Hip hip pioneer, DJ, web-developer and photographer D-Nice (United Camps), has an excellent series on his blog titled True Hip Hop Stories, where he chronicles some of hip hop’s finest and allows them to tell their story in their own words. Beautiful. That’s one of the things we’re going to do as well, allow the untold stories to be told. So, if you’ve got a story that needs to be heard, get at us.

His previous stories have featured Kwame, YZ, Dana Dane, Masta Ace, Joe Ski Love and many others. A must see for any hip hop fan and very well produced. This edition features one of my favorites, DoitAll from the Lords of the Underground talking about the genesis of the “Funky Child”.

He’s a very talented photographer as well can see from his gallery. He’s just posted his inauguration experience in D-Nice Presents: Experiencing The Dream — powerful.

“Classic (Better Than I’ve Ever Been)” — DJ Premier remix

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Arguably the dopest, most consistent producer over the last 20 years, Primo represented on this ‘classic’ track.

Featuring Rakim, Kanye West and KRS One and created for Nike for the 25th anniversary of Air Force One’s (2007), this feels like NYC hip hop, circa 1988.

You can check out more on the Nike celebration here.

In keeping with our “samplin’ sport” series, the remix features a sample from the original Kung Fu Master, Carl Douglass himself, “Dance The Kung Fu”.

Davy DMX – One for the Treble

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Influential DJ, Producer, Davy DMX is the man behind many classic hip hop artists such as Run DMC, the Fearless Four, Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde and many others.  A talented musician, he was also a member of Orange Krush (the band for Run DMC, Sweet G, Lovebug Starski et. al).  His album Davey’s Ride was underrated, and heavily slept on, so if you can find it — cop it. Remember “Have you seen Davy???!”
