Carmen Rodgers, Bilal & N'dambi

Hello my GFM friends!!!

It’s your girl WestStyle Chronicles back from a great session at the 1st Hit Listening Lounge.  With the wine flowing and an anxious excitement in the air, everyone was ready to see indie soul artists  N’dambi and Bilal.  In this sit down gathering, both artists got a chance to speak on their musical influences, current inspirations and future projects. Here are a few pics from that awesome event. A huge shout out to the Music Addikts, Harmony In Life, Mood Music, Jodine’s Corner, DJ Phaze, and JB for bringing yet another successful event. (more…)

[Video] Bilal – Little One

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

A very personal and powerful mini-movie from Bilal raising awareness to autism. The song was written as a tribute to his oldest son who is autistic. As an Autism advocate he led the 2010 Walk Now for Autism Speaks on the National Mall.

The largest crowd ever assembled in our nation’s capital for autism walked from the Capitol Building to the Washington Monument and raised over $750,000 for research, awareness, family services, and advocacy. For more information and to lend your support, please visit Autism Speaks.

They say it’s gonna take a miracle to bring you back again
They say there’s nothing they can do
But I’m not the only one who sees the possibility in you
You know your mama sees it too

No matter what it takes
I’ll make sure that you find, you find your way
I’ll know how hard you’ve been tryin’

Genius in the Key of Quincy

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

20 yrs ago a friend and ventured on a 20-30min ride outside of Atlanta to go see Quincy Jones’ documentary “Listen up”. To say we were awe struck was an understatement. But it is safe to say that we were forever Quincy Jones fans….and students.

Fast forward 20 yrs and Q releases a new disc “Soul Bossanostra”. My friend and I are split on it. He bought it and thinks it’s pretty good. I signed the save Q from himself petition on GFM! Who am I to criticize Quincy Jones?! The man has certainly done his share for music. However I do wish he would’ve leaned more on his musical ear instead of his commercial eye.

But instead of complaining I decided to play a little game. If I had to “share” my suggestions w/Quincy about the direction to take for a project here’s what I would’ve suggested for the Dude!

Project Title: Genius in the Key of Quincy

1. The Roots,Jill Scott, Badu,Mos Def, Talib,Common, Bilal, Jaguar Wright, Q-Tip,Jazzyphatnastees – Listen Up
Interlude of the Roots playing a score piece from one of Q’s films

2. Raphael Saadiq - Light up the Night(Brothers Johnson cover)
Interlude of Saadiq & Joss Stone jamming on “It’s my party”

3. Sy Smith & Lettuce – Razzamatazz (BGV- Lalah,Rahsahaan,Ledisi, Kenya Hathaway, Bilal)
Interlude of Lettuce playing a film score (more…)

Bilal Oliver – Robots/Someday We’ll All Be Free

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Bilal dropped this video for Robots yesterday to coincide with Election day. However, due to some technical difficulties, we weren’t able to post it. Luckily, the message endures and this politically charged atmosphere will continue, so all is not lost.

The single is off his latest album, Airtight’s Revenge [Explicit]. Be sure to check out his cover of Donny Hathaway’s “Someday We’ll All Be Free” after the jump too.
