R&B Crooner, songwriter and actor Eric Benét has successfully released five albums and is currently gearing up for the release of his sixth album entitled The One, which is slated for a Spring 2012 release. Very appropriately named, Benét’s new album The One marks a moment of positive transition in his life and lyrically speaks to the many new beginnings developing in his career and family. The One will also be the first album released on Benét’s newly formed record label Jordan House Records, which he created in partnership with EMI.
“Real Love” (available on iTunes) is the first single off Benét’s new forthcoming album The One and was the #1 added song to Urban AC when shipped to radio in October 2011 and is currently #14 on the Urban AC chart and climbing quickly. This new single is a taste of what to expect on Benét’s new album, which he describes as a “very contemporary approach to old-school songwriting integrity”. The One will also feature his signature mid-70s soul groove, a variety of instruments from strings to horns to featured artists and even a duet with his first daughter India.
Grammy Nomination
Eric Benét was also recently nominated for a 2012Grammy Award for “Best Traditional R&B Performance” for his single “Sometimes I Cry”, up against artists Cee Lo Green (“Fool For You” feat Melanie Fiona), R. Kelly (“Radio Message”), Raphael Saadiq (“Good Man”), Betty Wright & The Roots (“Surrender”). The Grammy Awards will air on Sunday February 12th, 2012.
Check out “Black Gold”, the new single from Grammy winner and all around cool girl Esperanza Spalding featuring Algebra Blessett. “Black Gold” has a great message about loving yourself and your roots and a beautiful video to match. Esperanza Spalding’s new album Radio Music Society is due out March 20.
Leonard Friend is the alias of one Alex Feder. Named after his grandfather who left music for a career in sales, the talented new artist and dancer could very well give Justin Timberlake a run for his money (whenever he actually decides to do music again). Out today, Friend releases his 8-track EP entitled Lynyrd Frynd.
Mixing the genres of pop and R&B, Feder crafts music that is quite danceable (first single “Serious Music”) and quite serious (“The Year I Die”) as well as tunes meant for the ladies (“Mrs. Friend” and “The Last Gentleman”). If you haven’t caught the video for “Serious Music,” check it out below. It was partly inspired by a performance by the late King of Pop back in ’93, when he performed sitting down because of a sprained ankle.
In a recent press release Friend says, “The reason I came up with the seated idea for the video is because I tore my ACL and had surgery to repair it and didn’t want to wait until I was fully recovered to make a video” … “I remembered a Michael Jackson performance at the Soul Train awards in 1993, where he sprained his ankle during rehearsal and performed sitting down. When I got up to dance that day at the end of the video, that was literally the first time I had danced in five months. We saved it for the end of the shoot in case I re-injured myself (which, thankfully, I didn’t).”

Here are the new visuals for experimental rap group Shabazz Palace’s latest single “Are You…Can You…Were You…? (Felt).” Well, sort of.
The song is from the duo’s debut Sub Pop release Black Up (which dropped last summer), but the video features a mother and daughter speaking in their native language as the two have a typical mother-daughter exchange: disagreeing about the girl’s way of life and style of dress. The group is nowhere to be found.
Shabazz Palaces includes Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, one-third of seminal 90′s hip-hop-jazz trio Digable Planets, who are best known for hits like ”Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” and “Where I’m From.”
Right before the release of Black Up last year, I had the chance to interview Butler over the phone…and I have to say, he was just as evasive in conversation as this damn video is. If you haven’t heard Black Up, it is a refreshing mix of glitchy, experimental hip hop. One of my favorite albums of 2011.
R&B singer Carl Thomas brings the visuals for his latest single “Don’t Kiss Me” featuring Snoop Dogg, from his new album Conquer.
The dapper video pairs the two up in a swanky lounge of sorts with ladies, champagne and two-stepping abound. Thomas returns with his fourth album, where he’s now signed to Verve Music Group, a division of Universal Music (Etta James, Ledisi, Daryl Hall). After the successful release of his 2000 debut Emotional, which garnered hit singles “I Wish” and the title track, Thomas subsequently released Let’s Talk About It (2004) and So Much Better (2007).
